What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic adipose tissue disease that primarily affects women and is characterized by symmetrical fat accumulation, most often in the thighs, hips, and lower legs. The condition is hormonally influenced and differs from common overweight in that the adipose tissue is often painful, swells easily, and does not decrease proportionally with weight loss.
Many experience a feeling of heaviness, tenderness, and a changed body shape where the upper and lower body are out of balance. For some, surgical treatment may be an option when conservative methods do not provide sufficient relief.
How is a lipedema surgery performed?
A lipedema surgery at Molding is performed as an advanced liposuction where both function and form are the focus. We use MicroAire, a vibration-assisted liposuction system that allows for gentle and precise removal of lipedema fat while protecting the surrounding tissue.
In addition to fat reduction, we actively work on shaping the legs and enhancing the body's natural anatomical landmarks, such as the knee area and the transitions of the legs. The goal is not to "drain" the area but to create a balanced and natural contour.
To improve skin quality and tighten the skin, liposuction is combined with skin tightening using Quantum RF 25. This radiofrequency-based technique is used to stimulate skin contraction and improve skin quality, which can contribute to:
improved skin tightening
reduced risk of skin excess
clearer definition and contours
Why two surgeries?
At Molding, we work with a two-stage method where the lipedema surgery is divided into two separate procedures. The first surgery includes the front of the thigh as well as the inside and outside of the thigh and calves. The second surgery focuses on the back of the thigh as well as again the inside and outside of the thigh and calves.
Treating the inside and outside on both occasions allows for a more even and harmonious shape around the entire leg. The divided treatment also makes recovery often more manageable and gives the surgeon the opportunity to fine-tune the result and correct any irregularities during the second procedure.
How much can be removed?
In each surgery, between 2.5 and 4 liters of fat are usually removed, depending on individual conditions, safety aspects, and treatment goals. By dividing the treatment into two steps, a larger total volume can be treated without compromising medical safety or the final result.
Who is a lipedema surgery suitable for?
A lipedema surgery may be relevant for you if you:
have diagnosed or suspected lipedema
experience pain, heaviness, or swelling in the legs
have fat accumulation that is not affected by diet or exercise
wish to improve both function and body proportions
Before treatment, an individual assessment is always made where your conditions and goals are the focus.
